Martin Luther King: Communicator and Visionary
On this MLK day in the United States, we celebrate the life and legacy of Martin Luther King.
Noted for his extraordinary oratory skills, MLK is perhaps less known for his equal power as a writer, which his Letter from a Birmingham Jail demonstrates so compellingly.
What can we learn from this writing and from MLK generally?
- Uncommon vision that transcends current circumstances (quite literally a jail cell in the case of the letter)
- Unwavering courage in the face of uncertainty and harsh resistance
- The power of commitment and communication to change the world
While most of us could never compare our own challenges with the trials that MLK endured, we can all honor his memory each day by seeking to emulate his strengths and virtues in our personal and professional lives and by upholding the fundamental decency and fairness for which he made the ultimate sacrifice.
