Working with Attorneys, Part 1: Finding a Lawyer for Your Startup

Though the legal needs for your new consulting business may be simple at first, make sure you’re working with a good lawyer from the start.

Getting good legal advice can be expensive, but a good lawyer can save you and your business thousands of dollars.

Contrary to popular belief, a lawyer will not tell you exactly what you should or shouldn’t do. Rather, a lawyer is there to offer advice and identify risks. It’s up to the business owner to learn what risks they can tolerate.

Ask your network for names of lawyers
Look for lawyers who have experience in your field
Find a lawyer who’s familiar with your state’s regulations
