Business Planning

Do you always need a plan for a new consulting business? The short answer is yes.

Even if your venture will start as a bootstrapped one-person show, you need to write out a business plan. Otherwise, you’ll have no roadmap to get from a vetted business idea to your first paying client, and you may lose your bearings chasing too many unrelated opportunities.

The flip side of under-planning for your new venture is overplanning.  You don’t have to nail down every conceivable variable before you start seeking clients.  After a reasonable level of planning, it’s critical to begin working with clients, validating your assumptions, and adjusting.

The resources below provide further guidance on the planning phase of your consulting or professional services venture.
